Our local Child Fatality Review (CFR) team is committed to learning from tragedy to protect tomorrow’s children. When a child dies before their 18th birthday, it is a profound loss for families and communities. Child Fatality Review (CFR) brings together a multidisciplinary team to examine the circumstances of these deaths—not to assign blame, but to understand how and why they occurred. By identifying risk factors, gaps in systems, and opportunities for prevention, we turn data and insights into action. Guided by the principles of the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention, our goal is to strengthen community safety, promote equity, and prevent future deaths through collaboration and systems-level change.

Local Health Jurisdictions like Benton-Franklin Health District are encouraged by the state legislature in Washington to conduct Child Fatality Reviews in order to identify common issues and find ways to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The authority to conduct these reviews is found in RCW 70.05.170.

Previous CFR meetings identified needs related to teen driving and passenger safety, childproofing for developmental stage, poison prevention, firearm violence prevention, suicide prevention, and safe sleep environments.
