Understanding Stress and Tips for Managing It

April is National Stress Awareness Month, a great time to focus on how stress affects our lives and what we can do to manage it.
Everyone experiences stress—it can help us perform better, but it can also become a problem if we
don’t know how to handle it. Too much stress can affect both our mind and body. This month is a chance to learn how stress impacts us and how we can manage it in healthy ways.

What Is Stress?

Stress is how your body reacts when you face challenges in life. These challenges, or stressors, can come from school, sports, family or even everyday tasks. Stress can be both good and bad. Positive stress, also called eustress, can motivate you to do your best. Negative stress, or distress, can make you feel overwhelmed, anxious or even sick. Understanding stress and how to manage it is the first step to staying healthy.

How Does Stress Affect Us?

When stress becomes unmanageable, it can have a big impact on both your body and mind.

  • Physical Health Problems  When you feel stress, your body releases hormones like cortisol. These hormones can be helpful in short bursts, but if they stay in your system too long, they can cause:

-High blood pressure

-Health problems

-Sleep issues -Weight changes -Stomach problems

  • Mental and Emotional Health  Stress doesn’t just affect your body—it also affects your mind and emotions. Long-term stress can lead to:

-Anxiety and depression -Trouble focusing or remembering things -Feeling irritable or angry -Feeling overwhelmed or tired

  • Unhealthy Behaviors  People under stress may turn to unhealthy coping strategies, like:

-Overeating or eating junk food -Smoking or drinking alcohol -Avoiding friends or family -Not getting enough rest or exercise

How to Manage Stress The good news is stress is something you can manage. Here are some simple and healthy ways to handle it:

Practice Relaxation and Mindfulness  Mindfulness means focusing on the present moment and calming your mind. Activities like deep breathing or meditation can help lower stress. Just a few quiet minutes a day can make a difference. There are apps like Headspace or Calm that guide you through easy relaxation exercises.

Exercise  Exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress. It releases endorphins, natural chemicals that improve mood. Whether you walk, play sports or do yoga, physical activity helps reduce stress and recharge your body.

Get Enough Sleep  When you’re stressed, it’s easy to stay up late thinking about everything. But lack of sleep makes stress worse. Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night. Having a regular bedtime and keeping your phone away from your bed can help.

Talk to Someone  Talking to friends, family or a counselor can make a big difference. It’s okay to ask for help. Sometimes just having someone listen helps you feel better and less alone.

Take Breaks  Taking short breaks during the day helps prevent burnout. Whether you go for a walk, listen to music or sit quietly, breaks give your brain time to reset. Don’t hesitate to pause when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Try Something Fun  Doing something you enjoy can ease your mind. Whether it’s gaming, drawing, cooking or spending time with pets, fun activities help you unwind and recharge.

Learn How to Say No  Taking on too many responsibilities can lead to stress. Know your limits and say no when needed. Setting boundaries helps keep stress from piling up.

Stress Is Normal

Remember, stress is a natural response to life’s challenges—but how you manage it makes all the difference. Try incorporating these tips into your daily routine to stay healthy and resilient.
