Falls Prevention Awareness Week

Benton-Franklin Health District's healthy aging staff acknowledges Falls Prevention Awareness Week and encourages everyone to recognize falling as a serious injury risk that is often preventable. By taking simple steps to improve safety and build strength, you can help protect yourself and those you care about from falls. Here's a guide to keeping your home and surroundings safer, along with tips for managing health and daily activities.

Home Safety: Create a Safe Environment

  • Clear Clutter: Keep pathways inside and outside your home free of obstacles. Watch out for cords, rugs, and uneven surfaces that could cause tripping.
  • Make Repairs: Fix any wobbly or uneven floors and add grab bars in key areas like bathrooms.
  • Prepare for Weather: Ensure your entrances are safe and well-lit to prevent slips.

Clothing and Medical Devices: Dress and Equip Wisely

  • Wear Safe Clothing: Choose clothes that won't drag or trip you up and opt for supportive footwear.
  • Manage Pets: Be cautious of beloved pets that might get in your way, so they continue to be a support rather than an obstacle.
  • Use Medical Devices Correctly: If you use a cane or walker, make sure it’s the right fit and cleared of obstacles. A physical therapist can show you the best way to use these devices.

Workplace and Household Tasks: Stay Safe While Working

  • Remove Hazards: Keep work areas free of boxes, hoses, and tools. Use the right ladder or step stool, and always have a spotter if you need to climb.
  • Maintain Cleanliness: Ensure floors are dry and repair any damage like loose boards or cracks. Wear slip-resistant shoes and safety gear as needed.

Medication Management: Stay on Top of Your Prescriptions

  • Review Medications: Regularly check with your doctor about your prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs. Some medications can increase fall risk, so discuss alternatives or adjustments if needed.
  • Organize Safely: Store medications where they are secured safe from children but easy for you to reach. Use dispensers or timers to help with dosage.

Vision and Hearing: Keep Senses Sharp

  • Regular Screenings: Schedule eye and hearing exams yearly to keep your vision and hearing in top shape. Update glasses or hearing aids as needed and keep them clean and in a consistent spot.
  • Address Changes: If you notice changes in your vision or hearing, consult with your doctor to address any issues promptly.

Nutrition and Activity: Stay Active and Energized

  • Eat Well: A balanced diet helps maintain energy and overall health.
  • Get Moving: Incorporate exercise into your daily routine to improve balance and agility. Consider joining a local class, finding a walking buddy, or participating in community activities.

Stay Connected: Talk and Support Each Other

  • Share Your Plan: Discuss fall prevention strategies with family and friends. They can help you stay safe and offer support.
  • Ask for Help: Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance with tasks and ensure you have access to a phone or assistive device in case of emergencies.

The Benton-Franklin Health District is committed to helping all residents thrive in safe and healthy environments. By taking these precautions and staying aware, we can all work together to reduce fall risks and maintain our well-being.
